Open House will begin at 6:00 pm with a clinical presentation:
Mothers and Daughters: Challenging the Intergenerational Transmission
This clinical presentation will draw upon feminist and psychoanalytic perspectives to explore the complex interplay of cultural, psychological, and interpersonal factors that contribute to disruptions in secure embodiment in mother-daughter dyads. A critique of neoliberal visions of health and wellness, consumerism, and the way these narratives are sexed, classed, and raced will be integrated into this analysis. Special attention will be paid to the internalized culture of body shame that is transmitted from mothers to daughters, as well as strategies to empower mothers to resist and challenge dominant cultural discourses about food, eating, and female embodiment. Clinical material from group process will be offered to illustrate painful experiences of body hatred and anxiety about food and feeding, it’s transmission, and interventions aimed at fostering creative resistance to internal and external forces of oppression.
Presenter: Jody Porter, LCSW (2015 graduate of Minding the Body: Culture, Gender, Creativity & Subversion)
