6.0 NYS CE Credit workshop. 4 sessions, Beginning Friday, April 7
Race, Class, Immigration Status and Size
Joanne N. Clark, LCSW
This course will be an exploration of the intersections of race, class, immigration and size. This module will pay special attention to countertransferential issues in therapy with clients who are ‘other’ e.g. of a different race, ethnicity, culture, class or size than the therapist.
Racism, xenophobia as it relates to immigrants (legal or undocumented), sizeism are oppressive subjects that are rarely acknowledged or discussed in our work with clients. Our clients do not want to talk about these subjects either because they are shameful, taboo and shame inducing. The clinician has to be prepared to be uncomfortable in these spaces and aware of the levels of privilege that they embody as they encounter their clients’ differences and intersectionality.
Offering a mix of theory and experiential exercises, clinicians will be guided in a safe space to explore issues of race, class, size and immigration.
Intersectionality or intersectional theory studies the overlapping or intersecting of social identities and their related systems of oppression, domination and discrimination.
–Clinicians will understand intersectionality and how this complexity can play out in the therapy room;
–Clinicians will gain knowledge to address differences of race, class, immigration status and sizeism;
–Clinicians will gain an understanding and sensitivity of issues of size and sizeism to avoid stigmatizing clients.
Course will be offered over 4 sessions each 1½ hours.
