WTCI Response to the New York Times Article:

They Rejected Diet Culture 30 Years Ago.
Then They Went Mainstream.

On January 18th, 2023, The New York Times published an article (https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/18/well/intuitive-eating.html) for which the following response was submitted and not published:

Much as we applaud the article, They Rejected Diet Culture 30 Years Ago. Then They Went Mainstream, by Michelle Ruiz endorsing Intuitive Eating, it is inaccurate to present this as new without giving recognition to Susie Orbach’s 1978 groundbreaking work, Fat Is A Feminist Issue, celebrated around the world, exploring women’s relationship to food, their bodies, desires and social location. Central to this work is an anti-diet approach, a nurturing non-judgmental self-attuned model of body acceptance and legalizing and enjoying all foods as well as attunement to hunger and satiation. While we support the work of Elyse Resch and Evelyn Tribole we want to correct this glaring historical omission of a key foremother of the anti-diet movement.

Sincerely,
C. Bloom., A. Gitter, S. Gutwill, L. Kogel, L. Zaphiropoulos
